Adaptation – Evolution to Survival
53
Fear of change comes from insecurity and doubt. Change isn't "bad" or "good", it is only inevitable. Instead of denying change occurs or bemoaning its affects, learn to ADAPT.
"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" - Harry M. Warner
Alert to Opportunities
Manage your thoughts by acknowledging that change will happen and view it as an opportunity to grow, learn and improve. One of the most difficult changes I've experienced is changing jobs. Every time I start a new job I feel insecure, wondering if I've made a terrible mistake. I'll remind myself that I've been here before and everything worked out. Usually after a few weeks on the job I'm so engaged in learning, I've forgotten my earlier concerns.

Develop a future focus by setting goals and timetables. This allows you to be in control of change, rather than waiting for the inevitable. If you proactively plan your future, you'll be much more satisfied with the results. There's a great book about change called "Who Moved My Cheese?" It is the story of a couple of mice conditioned to go to the same spot everyday for a piece of cheese. One day the cheese doesn't appear, but the mice continue to show up at the same spot, rather than searching for new cheese. One mouse decides to find new cheese but the other mouse is stubborn and refuses to change. Which mouse are you? Look for & Seize OPPORTUNITIES! Don't wait for the "right moment."
Develop Relationships
Start to network before you need help and then don't be embarrassed to ask for help. Most people like to help others, especially if the relationship is reciprocal - be willing and available to help others. Schedule time for networking and realize it is a continuous process. Network in many different areas including professional organizations, community and online groups

Add new skills
Your career development is your responsibility - create a strategy for personal development. Look for new ways to use your skills and take advantage of opportunities such as: offering to lead a team meeting or present information at a social gathering. Challenge yourself to grow and always be willing to learn, attend school or take on line courses.
Practice flexibility
Be willing to compromise and look for creative solutions. Identify areas where you have control and stop spending energy elsewhere. No amount of wishes or regrets can change the past. Don't waste your precious time thinking about what could have been. You only have this moment in time, so use it wisely.
Tenacity
Go for what you want - be courageous and persistent. The only people who succeed in life are those who are willing to fail, time and time again. Don't exaggerate the worst case scenario. Keep perspective by asking yourself, "What's the worst that could happen?"
