Be Genuine to Win

Something greater than raw talent sets apart the best writers from the rest. The combination of talent and a genuine desire to communicate with others is a powerful elixir. Somehow authenticity transcends words on the page and the writer's intentions are relayed along an invisible connection to their audience, who receive the message at a "gut" level.
Sure there are a few who can fool us for a time, but eventually their pretense of genuine caring wears thin. There will be clues of insincerity if we choose to see them.
"When you put up a false mask, you not only share experiences that are fake, you look at other people through false eyes. You don't see another person for what they truly are worth, but rather as an impedance to your own selfish desires." Stuart Tan
You not only need to be genuine with others. Be honest with yourself about your motivations and desires.
"Spend some time self-indulgently thinking about who you REALLY are. Not the facade you put on before you walk into any given group of people, not even the image you give your family, or your closest friends." Wikihow
Do you want to write a best selling book so you can quit your day job and retire? You may luck out with a great first novel, but chances are you won't be able to produce quality work that continues to please your audience.
To be a successful writer, you must WANT to be a writer and communicate with others. Writing is an arduous process, involving days, weeks or months of isolation and uncertainty. To stay committed, writing must be a labor of love.
"Writing is not passive, and it doesn't happen without you, to you, or in spite of you. When I have done writing that is raw and honest, I am exhausted and energized at the same time, the way you feel after running or walking a mile very fast. It takes energy and concentration and a commitment to the Big Idea." Michele Weldon - Writing to Save Your Life: How to Honor Your Story Through Journaling
I believe the best authors are those who give us insight into their personality, their likes, their dislikes and their character. A story may be familiar, but the author's unique voice distinguishes it from what has come before. As a writer you offer only one thing that can never be duplicated by another, YOURSELF.
