Writing articles is an effective method to increase your ranking with search engines. It can also be an efficient method if you work smart.
1. Research the keywords you wish to target. You might be surprised by how people actually search for your product. The slightest variance of a phrase may be the difference of several thousand visitors per day. Google has just released traffic information for key word searches @ Adwords. For example, I typed "Writing Articles" which has ~15K searches per month. "Article Writing" has ~22K and "Writing an Article" has only ~2K searches per month. The same words in a different order produce very different results.
2. Use the target keywords as the link to your site. For example, don't link to yoursite.com rather link as: How to Write Articles. Use the target keywords in the title of your article and sprinkled throughout. Don't over do it though or the article may be considered SPAM.
3. Use multiple sites to publish your articles. Hubpages and Peoplefuel are free to use and offer revenue sharing for the ads displayed. Wordpress and Blogster will host a blog but they don't display ads so your revenue is limited. Nonetheless, it's worth setting up accounts at multiple sites to create links to your site. You'll find a whole new audience for your work and enhance your credibility in your field.
4. Limit your article to one main idea and one key phrase for maximum benefit. Online articles should be ~500 words with valuable, if incomplete information. Be sure the content is original, including the supplemental articles pointing to your primary site. Google will filter duplicate content from web searches so it is unproductive to post duplicate content.
5. Have a conversation with your reader. You want to optimize your content for search engines, but you are not writing for a machine. As you write, keep your customers in mind. If you fail to communicate your intended message it doesn't matter if you have perfect punctuation or stellar word choice. Clear, simple language is the best approach for being heard.
These tips will help maximize the benefit of your articles. It is a time consuming investment, but the effort will return dividends for years to come.

One or two links should be enough and make sure they are both for your target phrase. You'll get more benefit from them that way.

How many links can you add to an article before it is considered to be SPAM?
I love hubpages and Peoplefuel, they are both cool sites.
