Reason to Create a Blog

Everyone has their own reasons to blog. Some people start blogging because they hope to supplement their existing income, while others want to earn a living. Before you create a blog, consider what you want to say and why. Your approach to blogging and marketing will vary according to your goals.

My reasons for creating a blog include:

1) Sharing ideas

2) Promoting my writing

3) Selling my book

4) Interacting in writing community

5) Providing resources for writers

My site is not highly monetized because earning money in not the reason I blog. I do want to sell my book, but my blog is more about promoting myself as a writer. It is my marketing tool. It is also my way of reaching out to the writing community and being of service. Personally I think that in order to succeed at any endeavor, you have to believe it is of value to others. You have to believe that you are of service. I know there are people who make money by hurting others, but being successful isn't always about the bottom line. Being successful is about being a decent human being and hopefully financial rewards come with that.

Once you determine your reasons to blog, you can focus on what to blog about. If your reason is to make money through affiliate programs, you may blog about the pros and cons of various products. An example would be weight loss products - once you are an affiliate with several reputable businesses, you can provide information on diet, exercise, nutrition, eating disorders, media influences, etc. All your content promotes the products you are selling.

My content supports my goals:

1) Story starters, how to find ideas, true crime stories

2) Tips on writing, goal setting, motivation

3) Appearance schedule, book signing dates, Coming Soon announcements

4) Allow comments, blog rolls

5) Share my experiences, struggles, tips that work for me, suggestions

Last but not least, there are other sites that allow you to post articles and link back to your personal blog. This is recommended by internet gurus to drive traffic and to rank for key words.

Once again, your reasons to blog will help you determine the best resources to use

1) Hubpages, Squidoo or PeopleFuel have revenue sharing. They split the revenue generated from ads in exchange for you posting to their sites.

2) Wordpress and PeopleFuel will host your blog on their site. This is good if you are only going to post 1-2 times a week, because the content is being refreshed by other users. Plus it helps you become an authority based on overall content of the site, not just the information you've provided.

3) Create a Blog will help you set up and market your blog to get the most traffic. This is good if you want to generate income through Pay Per Click Advertising or affiliates.

Good Luck. I hope you find all you're looking for in the wonderful world of blogging.

Oh, so glad you asked. I'm currently working on a YA novel titled Slipping Sideways and it will be published in 2009. I have two suspense novels that are now out of print. I do own electronic rights so I plan to self publish them as e-books but I don't know exact date yet.
